We will hold a curtain for no more than five minutes for any of the productions we do in a small theatre.  For our large summer musical, we've had to hold as long as fifteen minutes and still had audience members coming in (obviously the show was a hit!).  The orchestra had to begin due to time requirements in their contracts.

I managed an off-broadway theatre for five years and the standard for most union theatres is they either start at 8:05 or 8:08, depending on the theatre.  The published time of course is 8:00pm.  We currently start 1-2 minutes late for full houses.  We try to start the curtain announcements on time and the audience can still be seated then.

I just directed a show performed outdoors.  We had two performances we had to start late because of technical issued caused by wind.

It happens.

One or two minutes is MAX at my place.  If there's a line at the box office, we'll hold for that.  Otherwise, no way!

We want to get everyone in and seated before starting so sometimes we start late.
