Hi theater friends.

Here at my school, I've decided to go forward and try our hands at a musical, the first one in more than 20 years! I'm freaked, and that's putting it nicely.

I decided on Back to the 80's - a fun show with highly recognizable music.

Does anyone have any staging suggestions for this show? I've never had to plan a set around a large chorus since I've never done a musical.

Any advice would be appreciated 100 times over!!!

Thanks,
Jared

One word for you: Platforms. You want several different levels, which can act as separate staging areas for scenes or to suggest a separation of time and space.

If you can afford it, it may be nice to have projection surfaces behind the platforms.

I agree with Vickifrank; Platforms and levels are key to large chorus shows.

I am not familiar with "Back in the 80s", however so cannot give much more input than than.

The more people on deck you have at a time the more "levels" you need for "blocking". If there are 20 people on the deck in a big number, but the audience can only see the ones in the front, than everyone else might as well be singing backstage.

Go through the script and make a running list of each "location" and each musical number, with special note to the "big numbers". Mull over it, and hopefully something will start to form in your head.

Please post-back and let us know the state of things now and perhaps after you do this, I know I'd be happy to make some observations/suggestions.
