Hey Folks - Need some advice.

We are a community theater in a fairly small town. We are going into our third season. We sell about 85% of tickets for each show and have a good following. We've been very successful with new plays, new works, revues, straight comedies, etc.

I was thinking of "A MIDSUMMER'S NIGHTS DREAM" to open our season. It is different for us and unexpected but would be awesome.

QUESTION - Do you think this would go over well in a town that is pretty culturally void? I don't know if there has been Shakespeare around here - EVER!

Any other suggestions for family-friendly shows with a Big Bang!!!

It's a hoot. We have done it three times in last 15 years. Do it. They will come.
 Advertise it as fun/comedy.
Advice?? Cut it way down. Full show is too much IMHO. I have short version somewhere if you need it.

Do it.

As Magicwrench suggests, however, trim it down.

And don't worry about performing in a cultural void. The parody of "Romeo and Juliet" at the end of "Dream" is as close to a guaranteed crowd pleaser as anything you might find.

(I, too, have an edited version I'd be happy to make available to you, if you'd care to have a look.)

Let's see: Its a classic--so it could be advertised to schools. Everyone has heard of it so people know what they are coming to and it has name recognition. As was said it can be advertised as a fun comedy. Lots of fun roles, where actors will bring in friends to see them. If you have a great director and word of mouth, I'm betting you sell 90%

But hedge your bets and tell all the English teachers in town.

Yes, I think your audience would really like it. It is so much fun and there are so many clever things you can do. I have directed it once and would love to give it another go. Our small town audience got a big kick from it. Hope this helps.
