bullet Topic: play 4 a bar
    Posted: 9/10/10 at 8:41pm
I'm looking for a play that will fit well in a bar setting. We're looking at creative options for venues and have some appropriate bars- if we can match it with the right play. The theater is downtown Boston. I'm assuming (but could be proved wrong) that a comedy will work best-

Thanks!

There's a fun musical called "Piano Bar" - also, if you want something a little more serious, there's Robert Patrick's "Kennedy's Children"

Both take place in a bar - and could easily be performed in and around a real bar setting

What immediately came to mind is "Time of Your Life" by William Saroyan.

The first thing I thought of was "Picasso At The Lapin Agile."
Second thought was at the opposite end of the spectrum: "The Weir."

How about Four Beers by David Van Vleck
The play is set in a suburban New Jersey bar where four friends meet weekly to share a beer and the traditional televised Monday night football game.
On this particular Monday evening, the television set is broken, so the friends are forced into conversation in lieu of football. The men exchange thoughts about a variety of subjects -- women in general, wives, infidelity, vacations, life insurance, retirement, childhood dreams, cars, stamp collecting, among them. All four are approaching retirement age, and all have fallen short of their individual expectations and dreams.

I saw "Bar None" several years ago set in a bar. Very funny, a bit risque, but very enjoyable. [Spoiler Alert!! Stop here if you don't want any more details] I'm pretty sure it has multiple endings (a la "Clue"). They polled the audience near the end and whoever got the most votes ended up being the murderer.

"Bye Bye Liver" is a series of sketches all about drinking. It's had a successful run in Chicago and a recent showing in Minneapolis. It sounds perfect for a Boston bar.

'av a shoofty at 'Bouncers';-
This play is only single but it's a '4' & it's about a 'bar' Wink

Also 'Fur coat no knickers';-
I don't think you need to mimic the Pohmy accent in the dialogue or let this put you off, as it would work just as well in your local twang.

If there's a pool table, "Belmont Avenue Social Club" by Bruce Graham is great.

"A corrupt councilman has just died, leaving a city council seat to be filled. Fran, head of the all-White 51st political ward, chooses Tommy—an all around good guy, party loyalist and, most important, close friend of the deceased—to fill the seat. He chooses him above Doug, a well-educated, fast-talking, up-and-comer with strong support from the area's growing black districts. Doug has been waiting for this post for years, and when the opportunity arises to reveal a past indiscretion of Tommy's, he takes it, under the guise of saving Tommy embarrassment in the public eye. Politics is an intricate system however, and Fran sees Doug's ploy as betrayal, after the many years of support. Fran tricks Doug into revealing his true feelings about power and black and white politics, the catch being that Doug was caught on tape. Doug's threats to reveal the closed-door workings of the ward become moot when Fran holds the damaging tape. A black "outsider" is then picked to fill the spot, signaling not only a change in the ward, but a change in the future."

There's a "Pint-Sized Plays" competition in the UK for (very) short plays performed in bars.  See for example
"Babies" by Jonathan Edgington
"Merger Talks" by Tom Jensen
"Hi Santa, Remember Me?" by Trevor Suthers
