bullet Topic: Touring Productions
    Posted: 7/30/10 at 5:39pm
Hi all.  I'm an average community theater actor in CO.  I'm a white male, late 30's average build.  I have strengths and weaknesses like we all do.
An actor that I worked with just got picked up for a touring production of Legally Blonde.  I didn't know him very well but apparently he had gone out to NY occasionally to audition for touring companies.  It didn't sound like he had auditioned for too many, just here and there.
He's a perfectly fine actor for community theater and is a very good looking guy.  No offense to him but I just figured he'd have a long way to go before getting a part in a touring production out of New York.  I figure all of us would.
I guess my question is, how lucky is he to have gotten something like this?  I know that's an almost impossible question for someone on here to answer but I'm just curious since I know nothing of touring productions.  I assume he'll make very little money and will be stuffed in a van or bus most of the time but it's still a great experience.  I'm very happy for him...just curious about this type of situation.

For openers you didn't say whether or not you were auditioning for touring companies as well.  Seems that your friend made an effort and was lucky enough to have been cast.   There is no standard.   Directors and producers either like what they see or they don't.   You make the effort, you audition.  Sometimes it pays off sooner than for others and sometimes, unfortunately for alot of folks not at all.   It ain't rocket science and contemplating one's navel about why the universe moves this way for one person or another is another useless exercise.  Just get out and do it, take care of yourself and good things may befall you.

For openers I did say that I knew nothing of touring productions so that would imply that I probably haven't auditioned for any.
Secondly, your post reeks of annoyance at the very nature of my request.  May I suggest not answering it next time if it annoys you?
I was looking for info, not an empty pep talk ok?
Thanks.

Wow, really?
I do know something about touring companies, there are many types of tours and Legally Blonde is now available as a Yellow Card Production, which means that it does not require Equity Personnel.  The Broadway Tour is coming to a close and the Yellow Card Production will be taking over.
As the previous post mentioned, casting directors make a good portion of their decisions within a few minutes of an actors audition, so it depends on how they are feeling when they cast.  And yes, depending on the type of production, Equity pays the most, but you can recieve significantly less pay if you are in a yellow ticket production.
Finally, you should really respect anyone that is trying to give you information when you post in a public forum.

The two greatest days in a theater persons life, the day you start a new show and the day the damn thing closes.

I love how I use the same amount of "sting" to my post (that even included a smiley face I might add) and I'm not being respectful while that person's post is conceived as helpful?
Telling me that my post is "useless" and using phrases like "it ain't rocket science" does not deserve respect and it was not being helpful.  Plus it's not like I flamed the person back and called them names or anything, I just explained that it was pretty clear that my post annoyed that person and suggested that not replying is a better option in the future.
But thank you for your post though, it was very informative and helpful.  I didn't know about yellowcards and it's something I'm going to go and research more now.
Thanks again.

Just to help clarify something in this thread, a "Yellow Card Attraction" is a tour that is operating under an IATSE collective agreement and thus all the stage hands and technicians (both the touring and local crews) must be IATSE members. It doesn't have anything to do with Equity.

To the OP, if you're not an AEA member and think you'd like to tour, there are dozens of non-union touring companies around.  Some pay well and treat their people well, others don't.
