I'm doing a reading for a new show in which I play the wife/mother sitting at her husband's deathbed and naturally break down crying.

Do you work to really cry or to simply sound as authentic as you can?  Naturally I don't want to over do it.

Luckily, when I have had to  cry there has not been a problem.  My encouraging words are to be in the moment.  Stay in character. Break a leg!

If you are able to turn from the audience before the tears are needed, you can pinch the upper lip close to your nose.  Pinch it hard and you will cry.  I have done this many times.  It hurts, but it works.  Suffer for your art.

One of the BEST pieces of acting advice I've ever received is "DO NOT CRY".  Play the words and be in character and try your hardest NOT to cry.  Very rarely do people feel the complete liberty to let loose and cry and sob openly.  The real and honest reaction is NOT to let people see you crying.  And then inevitably, you do cry.

Thank you for the tips.  I'll rehearse them.

Actual tears are far too overrated. Most of the time, the audience cannot even see them and they interfere with your voice. Concentrate more on body language and voice. Think about how you sound when you cry. Break a leg!

marybridget12 is absolutely, 100% correct.  Body language and voice.  Don't sweat the tears.  It almost always works best, too, if you sound more like you're trying NOT to cry, than trying to sound like you're crying.  A quaver in the voice and/or a catch in the throat is usually all you need.
