bullet Topic: "White Sheep of the Family" Set
    Posted: 4/09/08 at 12:53pm
Hey all!  I just wanted to share these pictures with you of our completed set for "The White Sheep of the Family"
We used wallpaper instead of paint for the walls which was nice because it's really easy to put up and a lot less messy than paint.  All you have to do is staple gun it in at the top and bottom, a couple pieces of tape to keep the wallpaper flat, and you are good to go!  Finished product looks really nice and if you don't have a artist who can paint designs for fancier sets, this solves the problem Big%20smile.  Oh it is a bit more expensive than paint, but I found some discount sites that give great deals on closeout wallpaper (the wallpaper in these pictures was only 5.99 a roll)  so it really doesn't break the bank either.  Enjoy!

This is the whole set, sorry the picture isn't so great...

Closer look at the middle.

View of the bar...

Our terrace and mantle.

Our safe hidden behind a picture.  That was a pain to put up.  But I think it worked out well.

Ok just wanted to share!
Thanks,
Kendra

Thank you!
For the most part yes it is my design.
I actually ended up taking over the set design from my director because she came down with a horrible flu that has been going round here.  She was pretty much out of commission for about 2 weeks.  So I ended up taking over for her until she was able to come back.
Boy was it stressful, but I'm really proud of how it all turned out and she was pretty happy too.  She had the idea to put the apholstry on the chairs and couch so that it would all match and I kind of just ran with it to make it coordinate with the wall paper and actually the cast really helped out with the props and stuff.
So it was more of a group effort than anything else.

Thanks again,
Kendra

On a side note:  This is really kind of fun.  The picture that is hiding the safe is actually my great-great-grandfather.  It was really fun going through all of my grandmother's old pictures to find one that we could blow up to make the portrait.

Your set looks great, BB, especially the fire place.  We had to do a in wall safe once and you're right, it was a massive pain in the fanny.  However, the worse thing we ever had to engineer was the roll top desk for "Front Page" - we had to remove the back of the desk and cut a hole in the wall so that the actor could 'hide' in the desk for half an hour or so.  It looked great, but was a major heartache at the time.

Thanks for posting the shots -

Charlie

No..Not a working fire place (Thank goodness!)  Actually, the play takes place in August, so we just needed the mantle.  It really is just all plywood and crown moulding.  The back of it is currogated cardboard with printed stone on it that is left over from a previous play.  We spraypainted it lightly toward the top and then nearer where the coal box would be more heavily.  And straight black where the coal box would have been.  The hearth is a piece of plywood painted a nice slate grey with lines to resemble stone on it.  The wood is all pretty cheap plywood that was stained and then ployurethaned so that it will be shiny.  I like cheap! lol.  We have very small budgets, usually less than $1000 for set, costumes and posters/programs so we reuse a lot of pieces and luckily a lot of our stuff is donated or discounted.

Charlie, wow!  I'm glad we didn't have to do a desk!  I think my head would have poped! lol.

Thanks guys!
