I want to go to the community theater and when i get there what should i say? I'll take any part. I'm 21. Do i need to bring anything with me? No experience, but i'm dedicated. Rather do film, but i have to start somewhere. And my names Joseph. I live in newark NJ, right by Bloomfield off of bloomfield ave. I really want to do something. This girl said to go to the community theater and say i want to audition for any part and have at it. I really want to do film as i said, but i must start out somewhere and i have alot of ground to cover...

The young Lass that advised you is right - just front up! But first check out your local Theatre or Theatre Association for audition news & info.

Try - American Association of Community Theaters;- \http://www.aact.org/index.htm they have a database, that might help &/or be able to advise you.

Being a young bloke, you won?t have a lot of problems, as most amdram groups are crying out for males, at the best of times!

Be prepared to do a lot more than just treading the boards, as a 'warm prop' - muck in & get your hands dirty it is all part of stagecraft!

Thanks alot for your help and encouragement. It's always been something i wanted to do. I had a hard time in hs, so i didn't get a chance to participate in any extra cirricular activities unfortunately..... But my family thinks that i should go to college to be a mechanic and i keep thinking about acting. Like i can't stop thinking about just doing it and i feel kinda attracted to it and i want to give it a shot. Yeah, i had other interests like in music..... But nothing this strong. I was actually excited today to check for any replies, and i stopped for a minute and realized that i'm excited... so it must be something i truly want to do.

I went to that website and i found "Studio Players" a few towns over. On their website it says that auditions are in june, next month. And they have membership meetings that everyonesw invited to... The next one is on June, 5th, should i go? And should i audition next month, or should i ask to be apart of the crew you think? Membership is like $38 i think.... But you can audition without it, and to be a member of the crew you don't need a membership.. It's just for a newsletter, and little perks within the theatre, like being able to vote on proposals... I don't really care about that. I just want to act.... Thanks again for taking time to help me out. Not everyone is that kind.. And i posted on their boards to get maybe some tips from some of their members on the link you gave me..

Personally I would say to go their meeting, but don't become a paid member.  If they currently have a show going offer to help backstage or front of house.  It is always helpful to have your face "known" at the community theatre level.  Alot of times if casting a role comes down to 2 equally talented people the role WILL 9 times out of 10 go to the person they know.

Best wishes to you,

Susan

Will do! I went to the site again and they have a members meeting every tuesday of the month. So it'll actually be on June, 7th at 8:00pm. I'll go there with the intentions of getting a script for the play that's being auditioned in June. I'll also get to know the people there and express my deep interest for acting. I'll also tell them that idf they have a show running these days that i'm more than willing to work in the crew or maybe in the front of the house..... I'm thinking that if they give me a script i'll read the whole thing and contemplate the characteri want to audition for... Then i'll mark all my lines with a marker, and the cues in a different color and practice on my mom or something and become confident for the audition! If i don't get casted, i'll consider it experience and i'll be in for the next audition, work in the crew, or in the front for the play. I'll also check out other places to see if there's more opportunities out there. Maybe even go for an extra in some movies so i can get some film experience since that's really what i want to do and all.

Thanks for your incite  You gave me direction. Well, i was already asking myself alot of questions and i felt kinmda doubtful about going trhere, but you cleared the way and now i feel like i must go. And yeah, i want to go.

We are all with you.  Good luck! Or as it's said in the business, "Break a leg!"

lol. Where did that saying come from anyway? Someone actually broke their leg? Dumb question... nevermind lol. I heard that everyone in this business is selfish and step on others to get ahead... I haven't seen anything like that....yet.

I contacted alot of filmmakers and i came across 'The Shallow Wastebin Project' where i'm not judged on my experience when i audition to join the project, but on how well i will listen to them and stuff like that. It's in NYC, and it's the best thing i saw yet in regards to film.

All is well with the film project i'm joining. I feel pretty confident that i'll be accepted. But! I just looked over the theatre auditions, and while it says no experience necessary... they're singing parts!!! Should i just work in the background instead to get a feel on how things go? I mean, i was a little nervous about auditioning in the first place... but singing/dancing!!! That seems kinda broadwayish to me... And they're good at what they do, i'm not. I'd probably look weird.

You never know what kind of actors they might be looking for.  Auditions always have the potential to be daunting, but at the same time, it will be a good feeling to have been "through it" once, regardless of the outcome.  See if you can get more information about what is going to be required of you at auditions by contacting the theatre or the director.  If you aren't a "singer", maybe there are non-singing parts that you could audition for.  I heard a director say once that he likes to know what "special" things an actor can do -- if you have a "specialty" be sure to either state it on the audition form or give the director a sample of your special talent -- that in itself might give you a special edge -- you never know...do you juggle? can you yodel? do you do any tumbling stunts? do you know any fancy dance steps?  You get the idea.

And even if you are not cast in the show, you should make yourself available to them as a crew member.  Let them know from the outset that you are willing to do just about anything (if that's true).  They should be thrilled that you showed up!
