bullet Topic: A portable stage
    Posted: 12/16/04 at 11:43pm

I'm posting in this section because I feel it has more to do with running our theatre as opposed to sets.

Does anyone use portable stages on a regular basis?  I?m thinking of renaming our group ? The Nomad Theatre ? TNT.

Seriously, we have no place that we can use on a permanent basis and we spend the majority of our time looking for someone to take pity on us.  I think this one roadblock has had more to do with the demise of our company more than any other single issue.

I believe that I may have found a short term solution, but we would need to take in our own stage.  I hate to purchase something like this because I don?t know how long it can truly be utilized.  And not being a craftsman, I have no idea how hard it would be to build our own and still keep it portable.

If you have any suggestions for this situation ? I?m all ears (or in this case ? eyes).

G?day Scot

Under the circumstances, portable rostrums may be the way to go! These can be utalised later, if you do manage to get your own space & easier to store?

If you build a folding hinged wooden or steel framed base [legs] with drop on plywood floor plates [tops]. It?s good to keep them to standard size boards 8 [2400] x 4 [1200] available from the suppliers [this will reduce having to cut them to the size]. You can get stagecraft info from the library or the net, which will show you various way to build these for the stage.

Work out the height you will need, remembering that you will have to match up to standard treads [steps]. The base frames are normally of a gate leg construction, however there are many innovative modular frames used, that can be made into different heights. It may be better to find a good ?Choppy? or someone experienced with DYI &/or construction to do this, as safety is the biggest factor!

{you should make an impact & get off to a big bang - with the name!}
