Community Theater Green Room Discussion Board: Stone fireplace

Message

   I need to make a simple stone fireplace large enough, and sturdy enough, to have a hook inside it to hold a pot.  I was thinking about a wood frame covered with chicken wire and paper mache, but I was wondering if anyone had a better idea.

	I made a stone fireplace for Deathtrap. I used a wood frame and then I dolloped expanding foam (weather seal from a spray can) on it to create the stones. Then I spray painted the foam with that granite colored spray paint. I used several colors of paint to make the rocks and grout look different and aged. It looked very convincing and could be carried by one person.

	Make the frame with wood and then attach styrophome sheets to the frame. Then use a sodering iron to cut the foam to look like bricks, or use a blow torch to make the foam look like stone. http://mcmorran.com/phct/pastpics/P0006138.jpg is foam shaped with a blow torch. The foam walls had not been painted yet at this point, but you get the idea. http://mcmorran.com/phct/oliverpics/DSC00407.jpg - The fireplace in the back is foam with lines cut into it with a sodering iron. Cool effect and it was stong enough for a hanging pot.

	just a note. when using a blow torch or sodering iorn on foam do it in a well ventlated area! same goes for spray paint. safety first.

	I have had success with just a wooden frame coverered in lauan, and just some quite detailed painting.
