I need to make a simple stone fireplace large enough, and sturdy enough, to have a hook inside it to hold a pot.  I was thinking about a wood frame covered with chicken wire and paper mache, but I was wondering if anyone had a better idea.

I made a stone fireplace for Deathtrap. I used a wood frame and then I dolloped expanding foam (weather seal from a spray can) on it to create the stones. Then I spray painted the foam with that granite colored spray paint. I used several colors of paint to make the rocks and grout look different and aged.  It looked very convincing and could be carried by one person.

Make the frame with wood and then attach styrophome sheets to the frame. Then use a sodering iron to cut the foam to look like bricks, or use a blow torch to make the foam look like stone.
