I am looking for a good, reasonable place to rent painted backdrops. Particularly, I need an old London skyline. Maybe with St Paul's dome or similar.  I have done several searches on the web and come up with very little, so if you have a reliable source, please let me know. Thanks.

Marty- I don't know if they will have what you are looking for, but the teacher at my daughter's middle school rents backdrops from the Charles H. Stewart Company in Massachusetts.  Maybe they can be of help.  Good luck.

Marty,

I happened into this site and thought I should reply to your inquiry.  I am the scenic artist at Kenmark, Inc.  We have approximately 600 backdrops in rental inventory and also do custom work.  Our website with online catalog is http://www.kenmark-inc.com - www.kenmark-inc.com .  Phone# (913) 648-8125.  Best of luck.

Marty,

You can also check with Tobins Lake Studio in Brighton Michigan.  Having dealt with both Kenmark and Tobin, Kenmark drops seem to be more show specific, while Tobins are basically generic.

It's too late for the original post...but if anyone else is interested in renting scrims or painted drops at very reasonable prices ($195 for 2 weeks for most) try:

http://www.studio-productions-inc.com/rental_order.html - http://www.studio-productions-inc.com/rental_order.html

Its not publicized on the site, but this company will even paint you custom scrim drops--and if the drop is re-rentable, they will RENT you that drop.

They also sell inexpensive scrims and will advise you on the use of those scrims:  1-800-359-2964   A 15'x30' scrim is $450 (or $530 flame resistant treated)...beat that!  Better yet, you can get a scrim in about a week.  http://www.studio-productions-inc.com/rental_order.html - http://www.studio-productions-inc.com/rental_order.html

Hi - I'm the scenic artist mentioned above, and I just ran across this discussion board. It might be a little late to help the member looking for a London drop, but I've just started my own backdrop rental business at www.selectbackdrops.com... where coincidentally, you'll find a London drop.

I hope you'll check out my site when you're next looking for a drop to rent.

I realise this is an old topic & it has well & truely pegged out by now.
But I ran across this site, which is no good to anyone there. But I thought it was quite innovative with it's 'sectional Backdrops';- http://www.backdrops.com.au/functions/page/493 - http://www.backdrops.com.au/functions/page/493
From what I gather they use zippers & paint the drop ib such a way, it can be unzipped & broken down to fit most venues from the large venues to the village hall.
I have seen one, bought would imagine it to be a great idea, as even the tie on header & tail pocket are detachable & can fit on to various size cloth sections.
Not that I'm going to try to attach zippers on to a back drop cloth any time soon. But it worth considering when making your own drop cloths. Although I think velcro would be easier to apply, than a zipper, so it has a lot of potential.
Just a thought

I rent a lot from http://grosh.com/ - http://grosh.com  and http://tobinslake.com - http://tobinslake.com .  If you need an interior mansion set around Christmas, you need to order WAY in advance, as most are rented for "Nutcracker" productions.

You can also try http://fclo.org - fclo.org , which is an OC light opera company that rents their backdrops.

Star Depending on how much you are wanting to spend...Grosh.com is a great place to find backdrop rentals.  Many of them you get for a week and they run around 250.00-350.00 dollars.  That may seem high, but compared to Fantastic Designs or some of the other ones out there it is pretty reasonable.  We have used them a few times and I must say they are fabulous.  Some are exact replica's of the ones on broadway.

I've rented many many many drops in my years of theatre design..and the two best companies to deal with are Grosh, and Tobins Lake..best prices on rentals and shipping.  Next in line would be Kenmark.

Lastly, I've never rented from stage-productions out of Chicago..but have purchased their Chameleon Cloth (similar to scrim) and I like it alot for being able to keep a shape and easily paintable with a spray gun.

Chameleon scrim is a product of Studio Productions, Inc.  the company that I work for.  Thanks for the praise flyweed.   We also rent scrims....including printed scenic scrims.
