Hello all.

I have a solid back wall of concrete that my director would like bricks painted on. The wall is 32' wide by 24' high. What would you suggest is the easiest way. The wall is already black.

Tape it out and paint brick red? Make a stencil and do small sections? Brick shaped sponge?

Of course I am trying to get the director to rent a painted backdrop but don't think he will.

Any suggestions?

I usually make a stamp out of a brick shapped sponge, much quicker then taping out and looks just as good.

I saw a professionally done set where brick walls were represented by sections or odd-shaped "patches" of brick that were painted, but the bulk of the wall was the same color/texture as the base color of the brick. It was clearly less work than bricking the whole wall, it looked fantastic, and definately a cut above the "high school" looking cookie cutter, stamp and repeat method. Of course to get that look, I'm sure some artistic ability was needed. If you have someone with that kind of talent, it might be worth recruiting him/her. Just a thought...

The last time I asked my set painter to do a brick wall she came up with a clever idea. She painted the wall the grout color. Then she cut a couple 2x4s the sizes she wanted the bricks to be and stapled pieces of old towels to them. She set a couple of chalk lines, passed out the 2x4 stamps to the crew and the wall was done in no time. The 2 x4 s where easy to hold on to and the towels didn't hold as much paint or get as soggy as the sponges did. When the wall was all stamped out she took sea sponges with grey, black and green paint and stippled on moss and worn spots. It looked wonderful.

Paint the entire wall the color of the mortar and use several sponges cut out as bricks. use several different brick colors and rotate the sponges for different surfaces.
