Hi,
I wanted to ask a question about musical comedies,
not sure if this is the right place but I'll start here!
We are a small, rural, community theatre group and are
looking for musical comedy scripts we could possibly try.
Cast size would need to be approx. 10 and we would like to
include some strong female roles. Any ideas? We have done
lots of plays but never a musical, this would be our first
attempt.
Thanks,
Helen Payette

Our group did Nunsense and we had sold out performances almost every night (5 nights over 2 weeks). Can't get much more rural than where we are. Population of the immediate area we reach is about 12,000 people. Other musicals we have done successfully are Babes in Toyland and A Christmas Carol. One of the reason for these successes is due to the involvement of the many children on stage. Brought lots of parental backstage help and family patronage at the box office. Good luck!

One good musical that provides very small casting and a 3 and 3 split of men and women is "Baby." I think it's available through Music Theater International (www.mtishows.com)

It's a wonderful show with great music, and all six of the performers get wonderful opportunities to shine.

Let me know what you think!

Here are a few suggestions: "Quilters" a musical play for 6 or 7 women(Samuel French show); "Two By Two" (Rodgers & Hammerstein Music Library); "The Fantasticks" (small cast - some roles are not necessarily "gender specific" - Music Theatre Intl show); The various "Nunsense" shows (Tams-Witmark).
Contact the licensing agencies for their catalogs!

I just saw a WONDERFUL musical last weekend - it is called RADIO GALS - just wonderful - 6 women and 1 man - ages variable - only problem is that the cast must be able to play their own accompanyment - one on the piano, one played violin and base, one played clarinet and sax. One played guitar. They all switched off on drums. They were actors first, singers second and musicians third - even the rough spots in the music were fine and part of the overall play. Take my word - look at this one!!!
