We are a brand-new community theatre group that was spun off from a summer musical produced last year by our local university. Last year's show was marred by the fact that the vocal conductor, choreographer and producer were cast in lead roles, leaving many feeling that auditions were fixed. in an effort to keep that from happening again, we have adopted a bylaw that stipulates that paid artisitic staff may not audition for a role. is that unreasonable?

No, that's not unreasonable. We have that guideline as well. We also have a guideline that says if the spouse or significant other of a paid staff person wants to audition, that at least three board members need to have a role in the casting of that individual. Doesn't come up very often, but in the past when it has, we have been quite glad we made the ruling. All of this appears in our job description.

We only have a fully fleshed out director job description. That's the only staff we pay -- others are volunteer. I'd be glad to send it to you if it would help.
