Hi. I am going to try out for my first community theater production. I need to bring a resume and headshot. I don't have either. They said I could bring in any close up picture of myself, but what about a resume? I need some tips on what to write. I have only been in a few plays in high school, 10 years ago. I can sing and dance, but don't really have any experience in actual shows. Any tips would be appreciated. Also, I need to sing a ballad and an uptempo song, any suggestions?

Thanks so much,
Robin

A resume is an evolving document and pretty easy to develop. Some of the basics are to list contact information, experience and areas of study. You should put these things in a short cover letter. On a separate sheet, list your show involvement and parts played. I can't help you with selecting a number to sing.

To give you an example, Following is an excerpt from my resume for directing and lighting, sound and scenic design. This has worked for me for a number of years.

If you don't have a lot of experience, don't be afraid to admit that fact. Just prepare for and give a dynamite audition. Don't be afraid of being an extra, either. It will help you build your experience and give you something to be proud to put in your future resume.

Fiat Lux!

Here is the resume sample. Unfortunately, it didn't format very well, but it should give you an idea>>>

Thank you for allowing this opportunity to present my qualifications in the theatre arts and my involvement in theatrical production. With 35 years of experience, I bring a sincere love of theatre and the desire to share knowledge and continue growing. I am a well-organized communicator with a great attitude and a solid background in directing successful productions. I enjoy working with a variety of people and seek creative and challenging experiences.

Theatre is a labor of love. I am firmly committed to the idea that Community and Not for Profit Theatre should be fun and should serve it's dedicated members with teaching and helping them to grow by learning and doing. This is and has always been my goal.

A brief and partial listing of some areas of my theatrical study would include:

Directing OJT/Galli & Dobbins Lighting For Stage and Film/Box
Improvisation for Theatre/Spolin Practical Stage Lighting/Shelly
Theatre Games for Rehearsals/Spolin Theatrical Design and Production/Gillette
Thinking Like A Director/Bloom Stage Management/Ionazzi
A Sense of Direction/Ball Sound Reinforcement/Davis & Jones
Play Directing Survival /Rodgers Essentials of Music for Nonusicians/Dorritie
Directing Musical Theatre Scenic and Set Design/Bourne
Prop Building, Molding & Casting/James

As we all know, directing theatre is as much about organization and management as it is about art and emotion. I bring a strong background in management and would be happy to share my methodologies of show organization.

In addition to my love for the stage, I author regular technical columns about theatre and television both in print media and on-line media. A list of publishing credits is available on-request. Also, I am a member of the American Association of Community Theaters (AACT).

I am sure my background will be of interest to you. Brief summaries of my qualifications follow.

Sincerely,

Bil K
