Could someone explain to me what is contained in a press kit? I've tried "googling" this and haven't come up with a lot. Also, is it better to do a press kit by email, by snail mail or both?
Thanks

I don't know the size of the town youlive in but I have always lived in fairly small towns and press kits were waste of time. The first couple of shows I did we made up a press kit containing photos of the cast in costume and street clothes, a play synopsis, cast list, directors comments and other show particulars and it was never used. The local newspaper was always happy to do stories on us but they sent out their own photographers and wrote their own stories often times interviewing the director and one or two actors. I would provide them with a cast list with correct spellings and that's about it. We always got nice write ups and got lots of community support.
I would guess it would depend on the size of your town and how many newspapers there are! Call the papers and ask them how they would like to handle it. That's what we did after the first couple of times. We built a relationship with whoever was in charge of that area in the paper. I doesn't hurt to shmooze them a bit. Our local paper does not write reviews on community theatre soIt wasn't like we were trying to butter them up to get a good review but it was nice when we got on the front page of the entertainment section. A nice card or small gift is always a nice way to say thanks for the support and to help them remember you next time you call!!!
