Searching for comedies for high school plays that aren't vapid pieces written for high school. I've done the classics - You Can't Take it With You, Harvey, The Foreigner, Arsenic and Old Lace, The Curious Savage, Earnest (as RT). I've also done some that, as an English teacher, I'm embarrassed to mention - all written as plays for high school students. I need a comedy to draw them in but not something trite - no Cinderella Goes to High School or Alice in Funderland. Any suggestions?

Maybe something by Fred Carmichael? He has written several mystery/comedies with some fun characters. I was involved in a production of Done to Death recently that was well received.

The only show that comes to my mind is The Solid Gold Cadillac by Howard Teichmann and George S. Kaufman. A nice large cast, and a spoof of Wall Street shenanigans that still resonates today.

Otherwise, an alternative might be to eschew comedies and go for a solid Agatha Christie mystery: The Mousetrap, Witness for the Proscecution, And Then There Were None, The Unexpected Guest, Spider's Web, The Secret of Chimneys, Murder on the Nile, etc.
