Hey, guys, we're doing Seussical in about a month, and I'm looking for a good source for a very unusual hat for a kind of a sort of a hat wearing cat... yeah, sorry about that.

Anyway, I need a good source for a Cat in the Hat hat. I find quite a few online, but then I find reviews that say even when "one size fits most" is on the description, the hat will not fit an adult. My Cat is a pretty robust 18 year old senior, so we'll need a pretty robust hat. Beyond that, I want to make sure the hat stands up for the most part (most of the ones I've seen in person are floppy as all get out).

Any good sources on this? I'm just wanting to be responsible and not order 15 different hats looking for the best one.

On a similar topic, does anybody have a source for a CHEAP tailcoat for the Cat in the Hat? He had a regular tuxedo jacket we can use in a pinch, but I'd really like the tails. Thanks!

Check with a local concrete company, or general contractor and see if you can get a 3-ft length of Sonotube - a kind of mold for pouring concrete fenceposts, deck posts, pilings, etc.. They come in 6", 8", 10", 12", etc. diameters (3-ft is the shortest length they sell). Anyway, see if you can get some, then use it as a base to make your own hat. It's pretty light weight, and will definitely not flop.

Have you checked your local tux rental place? Ours is great. They donate whatever we need in exchange for a mention in the program. If nothing else, maybe they could give you a reduced rate.

The ones I've seen are pretty floppy to, but I had not noticed that they don't fit adults. They don't have a lot of support to keep them on your head, so you might consider a chin strap. As for the floppiness, you need to stuff them. I used a bag of foam packing peanuts, but other things could be used. I don't find the sonotube too enticing because it would be too round, and too straight. The hat should be bent a little and ruffled a bit.

We just finished Seussical! It's such a fun show. Do you mean the hat at the very beginning that the Cat is hidden in? Have you found one yet? Our prop's manager made ours and it worked great. If you still need one, email me dramasign@yahoo.com and I will get you the instructions on how to make it.
