Hello,

I may be directing The Nerd next year and just wanted to hear from people who have produced/directed it before. I love the script. I'd like to hear how well the show goes over with audiences and what some of the challenges/difficulties were that maybe isn't apparent when first reading it. Overall, any advice and warnings you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Food, food, food...the script calls for Cornish game hens (I found a way to make them last a 4 week run without stinking), macaroni salad, 3 bean salad, deviled eggs (we needed at least a half dozen fresh edible ones each show and a trayful of non-edibles for looks), garbanzo beans on crackers, cottage cheese and spaghetti. There's a scene that calls for hot tar (we used molasses).
The show was quite successful...audiences loved it and generated a lot of good word of mouth!
BTW, be sure to build a STURDY closet for Thor to hide in.

Ditto that on the food and props. You'll need someone backstage really on their toes to handle all that. Also, the monster costume was a challenge for us. Note in the script it just specifies something LIKE a sea monster costume. The answering machine/phone business was also difficult to work out for us. I had to figure it out myself because there was no one else to do it so I'm pretty sure we didn't have the best solution.

You might want to start scouting around ahead of time for someone to play the Nerd. I lucked out and someone showed up at auditions who could do it. If I had to do it again I doubt I'd take that chance.

Good luck! People love the show.
