Has anyone ever had to manage doing a show with bright flourescent lighting only in a large community center? We cannot turn off the lights except in rows. Any advice? Thanks!

I won't even let the group I work with use a fluorescent lights for house lights. I put a 600w or 1000w Fresnel on top of the piano and bounce it off of the white ceiling. Even then, I gel it.

You can try to turn off as many as possible and then gel the ones over the stage. Assuming a 2'x4' fluorescent, 2 sheets of 24"x20" gels would be needed for each light, but you will need some strips of card stock to make up for the area the gel doesn't cover. They don't have to all be the same color either.

Florescent tend toward blue-greenish so you might want to pick colors that might push the color slightly toward lavender or pale magenta. Maybe go to warm straw on the lights toward the back of the set.

You can also create a little skirt around some of the edges to block light from getting to areas you don't want lit, or even silver or white panels to bounce some of the light to where you do want it.

Adding a small amount of traditional tungsten light from the side will add a little sparkle and keep it from looking so flat.

You think I spent too much time doing corporate video??

Do do theatre you only need an actor and an audience. I'd approach it as if it were daytime, outdoor theatre. Leave the lights on and don't mess with them. Use other techniques to start and end the acts - use of music, simply dropping character, etc.

Admittedly that would still be theater, but it wouldn't be very theatrical :-)

You could use fluro sleeves;- http://www.rosco.com/us/filters/fluorescentSleeves.cfm - http://www.rosco.com/us/filters/fluorescentSleeves.cfm
or place gel over the light fittings defuser.
