Better to use a cue software, as you don't have to put files in individual playlists in order to have the playback stop at the end of a file, insert a pause of a given duration between files, play multiple files simultaneously, etc.  Also, you can assign different cues to different PC outputs, allowing you to have different sounds come from different speakers if needed.

If you have money and want something really good, get ShowCueSystem.  If you want something free that does a decent job, get MultiPlay.

Sound Cue software was a welcome addition to my audio gear. Most of the players cause problems with trying to start up a cue. We did a show with timed sound effects and every one of them was way off. There is also the fun time had by all when your intermission music starts playing in the middle of a show.. LOL

Another vote for QLab. It replaced our rack of mini-disc players as the sound and video source.
