A local CT produced 'Fiddler' a few years back and used tassels yardage from the fabric store sewn on lengths of appropriate material for the prayer shawls.  My husband is Jewish, so I noticed the difference, but the majority of audience didn't.

For the prayer shawls, our production (now showing) didn't even do full prayer shawls except for the formal shawls for the wedding.  Our 'men' (lots played by girls for our youth production) just had pieces that tied around the waist and showed under their vest.  These were everything from ends of wide scarves to tea towel ends and other items with the tassels and strings.  The problem we're running into is some of them need to be pinned on, and the kids just don't want to bother.

We rented the long coats, hats, and velcroed plastic bottles from DC Theatrical for the bottle dancers.  (ours will go back after the 12th)
