If a community theater is struggling should the actors, director and stage hands have to buy their own play books?

Personally I would have to say no.

Depends on what we're calling a theater and what we mean by struggling.. If sales just aren't what they have been and costs are more than usual, but you still have a bank account, the answer from me would probalby be no... I have worked struggling theater groups before where they had to rent the space, pay the royalty and basically get new set/tech stuff each time and they had maybe six or eight hundred in the bank (sometimes less) and someone jumps up and says, "Hey kids, lets put on a show!"  Then, when everyone is helping to pay for everything (cause thats the only way to go from there) I'd say, Maybe...
