I just finished playing Jesus in a passion play and had to come up with fake blood for the Crucifixion. This recipe is absolutly wonderful. It looks like real blood, splatters like real blood, dries like real blood, and (oddly enough) settles like real blood. It also doesn't tase bad.
Mix the cocoa powder thoroughly into the water before adding the other ingredients - it may help to use warm water. After adding the rest, blend the concoction well. If it sits for a while before you use it, make sure to re-mix it as the cocoa and corn starch will settle out. The recipe was enough for 4 quite bloody crucifixions with enough left over for one or two more. It also doesn't stain clothing or skin, even after 5 or 6 hours. It washes off skin with plain water. It will rub off if the costuming is made of a rough material, but as long as the actor is careful it shouldn't be a problem.
It also makes for wonderful blood splatters on walls as attested to by a friend who saw my bathtub after I'd put it on me (and had covered it with clothes) and asked if he needed to help me dig a hole.  ------------- aaron “One of my chief regrets during my years in the theater is that I could not sit in the audience and watch me” -John Barrymore |

You can also use chocolate syrup as well - producing the same effect and at least with a syrup it doesn't have to "mix" by dissolving since it's already a liquid as well. Same idea just a bit quicker. THE ONLY problem with this blood or any blood using Karo Syrup (corn syrup - same thing) and chocolate - ESPECIALLY if you're doing a show outdoors.....is that the bugs love you because it's so sweet!! HAHA!!! AND it's a mess to clean up for sure. Sounds like a good recipe. ALSO if you don't have to have it in your mouth at any time, you can use a bit of IVORY liquid soap which helps make the laundering of the costumes or anything it touches a bit easier too and also leaves no staining because of the food colorings. ALSO if you need it to flow well - and again don't need it in the mouth (but you can create two formulations) is to use Photo-Flow - which is a photographic "wettener" and makes the blood flow quite nicely too. But hey, if you've hit on a good formula and it works - well then you have success!!!
SOUNDS fattening too!! But that's the part I like!!
