I know this has been discussed before but do any of you have policies about pre-casting in your bylaws or stated formally otherwise? I'm talking about privately contacting and selecting a cast and not holding auditions at all.

It is "officially" frowned upon at our theater, though we all know that to a certain degree, it happens.  Now we do have two second stage productions each year (not part of the regular season package and often produced more with the theater and actors in mind) where precasting is allowed as matter of course......

Just to clarify, this would be a situation where we hold no auditions at all. The two cast members were selected ahead of time.

I would say it would depend on the rules and practices of your theatre.  Personaly I wouldn't have a problem with it (especially if I was one of the ones selected ).  My suggestion would be to be open and honest from the beginning.

Our theatre always holds open auditions, BUT the director may precast a role as long as it is announced at auditions.  We don't want someone trying out for a role just to find out it had already been cast.  Always be open and honest.
