So I'm think ing on starting some audition workshops in our area. Increasingly at auditions it's getting very lax and informal. People aren't prepared or really know what to do.

Now I know how to act in an audition and what to do and what not to do, but I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to do a one day workshop on it. Like what curriculum or how the class is laid out.

So let's talk about that.

I'd just have people get up and read sides and then direct them the same way I'd direct a show, trying to tell them what I'd be looking for as a director casting a show and what I would consider red flags. I guess Audition by Michael Shurtleff is one of the standard books on the subject. I haven't read it for a long time. (By the way, if an audition is lax and informal and people don't know what to do, that's the fault of whoever is running the audition.)

I completely agree. What I hope is that by getting enough people doing it right and making that the norm and not the exception, others will take notice and perhaps directors will start to expect more from people.
