I'm designing Once On This Island, and I would love to have some sort of quick cannon effect when the "war" starts... I'm looking for a big puff of smoke, maybe a little bit of a spark, and some noise.

My initial thought was to blast a lot of chilled fog into a garbage can and then release it, but I want something that will shoot more across the stage rather than slowly drift out of the can.

I'm also unsure as what to do about the spark.

I have some limited pyro experience, but I've never tried to shoot one any other way than just sitting on the floor, and I don't think shooting one sideways towards the stage is the best idea :)

Thankfully, the noise is covered... I think we're going out to a local fort to record them shooting their cannon.

So any smoke/ spark help would be much appreciated- thanks in advance!

UPDATE FOR THE CURIOUS:
I'm going to do sort of a modification of the fog in a can idea... I've cut a hole in the bottom of my trash can. Over the top, I have duct taped a piece of plastic tarp loosely (so it forms sort of a balloon). I have also added a handy shoulder strap.

To work it, I blow fog into the can, aim it, and then smack the tarp to create a big puff of fog that shoots across the stage 20ish feet, holding it's shape.

Some science somebody named Spangler was on the Ellen Degeneres show and had this idea.
