Need help ASAP...

Our production is 3 weeks away (we're doing the RSC version of Oz) and I'm still at a loss with the witch's fireball. I've had some suggestions such as using a child to play the fireball, miming the whole thing, etc.

Here's the catch...our venue does not allow pyrotechnics and does not have a fly! I'm desperate for more ideas - anything!

What if you had a stagehand in each wing with a cable for a decorated 'ball of fire' to travel on from one side to the other.
I'm not sure which version you are refering to, but maybe this will help.

Flash Paper Fireball

You can get this from any Magic Shop suppliers. also they have Wands available, you load with Flash Pads. Easy to use with the roller ignition, similar to a cigarette lighter mechanism.
Completely harmless!

This looks doable. I've also looked at using a flash gun. Do you have any experience with those? I've been told that a licensed pyrotechnician has to be on premises if there's any quote "pyrotechnics", but am wondering if flash powders and papers qualify? (I hope not!)

_popupControl(); I had a great run of OZ last year. We did it in our school.  I had a great witches broom that we bored a hole in the end of, inserted the flash paper wand into and Wam! great affect every night.

How did she use it...for fireball or for right before witchmelt? I like that idea! Was it in the handle or in the bristles?

_popupControl(); in the handle and for both... (have to reload while she is off stage)

She reaed back and snaped the broom tip toward the direction she wanted it to go.. and poof!...

When doing this with my middle school kids, I have always just had the Witch hold up a cigarette lighter - I was always afraid of using any kind of fx with the kids.

Thats a decision you have to make Mary.   In our show, our witch and our actors on stage during the use of the flash paper wand were all very mature, and were continually  "reminded" of the possililites... I wouldn't use it in an elementary school version or with flighty actors.
