How can I make it look like Applegate throws flame at the ball game? I'm not familiar with anything that the actor can really touch or throw. Thanks

Have a look at doing it with flash paper or cotton.

The flash gun is exactly what we used and it worked great. We also used flash paper and a zippo taked inside a hollowed out book to give a flaming book effect for one scene.
