Hey folks! Any advice on where to get swords that can be used in sword fighting...that gives the illusion of a real sword fight, not a plastic sword, but one that will really give a good metal clang noise? What have other people used for sword fighting (Three Musketeers/Pirates/Cyrano)? ------------- Community Theater makes us smile |

Hey Neil, you can either buy or perhaps even borrow regular fencing epees - they're fairly inexpensive - like $45 per I believe. Just shop around for them. The sound is good. That's what we used for Moon Over Buffalo where we had that brief sword fight at the beginning of the show. They don't look like much - the inexpensive ones don't - but they're functional....must be student training epees. Pretty basic thing and they hold up fairly well to use. Can't say where we bought them - Theater House in Louisville, KY perhaps. But just shop for them. If I knew who had them I'd see if they would loan them to you but I think the theater paid for them and things like that disappear over time.

You can buy these from vendors that sell in Renaissance Festivals. They have real swords and also unsharpened real swords. They aren't cheap though. Last I saw these, they had fencing, swashbuckling, sabers and more varieties up to claymores (think "Braveheart").

Hi,
We have produced both The Three Musketeers and Richard the Third and have used the following company: Google Scot Mann at Stage Combat. At the top right you will see (in very small letters) RENTALS. They give all of the information you will need (including prices) These people are really terrific to deal with and we have been super happy with their swords, daggers, sheaths etc. NOTE: You really need to have a professional teach and stage the combat sequences--we spent hours and hours with our students prepping them to use the equipment properly and safely--it paid off in the end. Also, you need to keep the swords and daggers oiled and polished--it makes a huge difference. Hopes this helps

Don't get swords from renaissance faires - please! Most of them are little more than "wall Hangers" - they will shatter very easily. Some good names to look for are Paul Chen and Starfire. Paul Chen sells a variety of swords including eppee and fencing, while starfire sells the "heroic" style longswords. ------------- ------ Troy A.
