Does anyone know where I can purchase long, white socks?  My actors are wearing knickers in our upcoming production and most socks come only mid-calf.  I need them to come above where the knickers end so we don't get a line of skin.

I've always had them wear legging tights. From a distance of 10' they look just like socks - and the actors don't have to fuss around with whether or not the tops of the socks have come out from the knickers.

When we did A Tale of Two Cities, we used white surgical socks -- the kind that people have to wear to keep from getting blood clots -- they are called TEDS.  If you are working with kids, since their legs are shorter, maybe men's tube socks would come up  high enough that their knickers would cover the tops.

We just finished a production of Cinderella with some colonial inspired fashions.  We used colonial stockings ($3.95/pair) from http://www.theatrehouse.net - www.theatrehouse.net .  they worked great for slender, male adults.  Two fuller calved adults used white, womens, plus size trouser socks purchased from Dillards, a local department store.  They worked just fine.  Just be sure to get thick trouser socks.  Thin ones are too sheer.  Think tights, not nylons for the thickness comparison.

You can also use soccer socks... They often are long enough to cover a couple of inches above the knee.

Also, check the website http://www.sock-dreams.com - www.sock-dreams.com . They have thigh high socks, but they're a little more expensive.

check any kind of rollerskating pro shop, roller derby girls wear over the knees socks to buffer the straps from their kneepads

Hope this isn't too late!  Try some of the dealers that cater to the RevWar or Civil War reenacting community - Townsend & Son has men's stockings in various colors (last catalogue I had even had clocked ones, IIRC); you can also try Regimental Quartermaster or Abraham's Lady in Gettysburg.  All have websites, I believe.
