I am directing our summer show "The Wizard of oz". I selected the MUNY version to give everyone a different take on the show. In the witch scene, she looks into a magic mirror and spots the four coming to kill her. The scene describes Dorothy being poofed away and appearing with the witch. I am not sure how tostage this scene. I have thought of recording it and then projecting it onto a screen. To operate with live actors the mirror would have t be enormous. I am really stumped on how to do the scene. The four of them do not hear/see the witch until Dorothy appears in the witch's castle.

If anyone has actually run this particular show, what did you do for the scene?

It wouldn't necessarily have to be enormous. You could do it with a frame for the mirror, without glass in it - if that makes sense. If you want to be really tricky, use some sort of gauze or otherwise for a scrim effect on it with light. If that section of her castle was mounted on a truck, it could wheel across the stage to allow space for Dorothy and the others?

Using just the mirror frame, place the Witch far DSL and Dorothy far USR - or the other way, it doesn't matter. This way you can use the stages depth for the audiences depth of perception.

I directed this show in '96, and I am actually doing it again in November (MUNY version as well). Last time we used far SR and SL (there were pods on either side of the stage, but they wouldn't really be necessary) with Dorothy and others on one side and the WW on the other. The rest of the stage was in total darkness with just pinspots on either side. When Dorothy had to appear on the other side, she simply crossed over; she wasn't visible at all. We didn't have access to projectors etc. then, so we kept it simple. I am interested to know what you end up doing, as I really haven't put much thought into this challenge yet.
