Hi there,
I have been asked to find a song for myself and I am having a hard time. The director wants a real DIVA song as I am playing the role of an older broadway star. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Off the top of my head:

"Broadway Baby" or "I'm Still Here" from Follies
"With One Look" from Sunset Boulevard
Anything of Mama Rose's from Gypsy

How about "I Am What I Am" from La Cage aux Folles
I am what I am
I am my own special creation.
So come take a look,
Give me the hook or the ovation.
It's my world that I want to take a little pride in,
My world, and it's not a place I have to hide in.
Life's not worth a damn,
'Til you can say, "Hey world, I am what I am."
I am what I am,
I don't want praise, I don't want pity.
I bang my own drum,
Some think it's noise, I think it's pretty.
And so what, if I love each feather and each spangle,
Why not try to see things from a diff'rent angle?
Your life is a sham 'til you can shout out loud
I am what I am!
I am what I am
And what I am needs no excuses.
I deal my own deck
Sometimes the ace, sometimes the deuces.
There's one life, and there's no return and no deposit;
One life, so it's time to open up your closet.
Life's not worth a damn 'til you can say,
"Hey world, I am what I am!"

"What Ever Happened to my Part?" from Spamalot is fun.  It is over the top diva.

My turn - I'm auditioning this weekend for the role of "Mrs Lovett" in SWEENEY TODD, & the audition notice specifies that they want a song the character sings for the audition.  I don't want to do "By the Sea", as I suspect that will be the most oversung - erm, POPULAR.  I'm dithering between "Wait" and "Poor Thing"...

Poor Thing really showcases the range of emotions that Mrs. Lovett manipulates, and offers opoportunity to show your belt as well as your regular voice.  Poor Thing gets my vote!  Best wishes for whatever you choose!

As for a Diva song, Popular, from Wicked is really lovely!

I can't remember the song mrs Lovett sings about the different pies she makes out of the types of the vicitms ?
But it was for me the most memorable, that required sing/speak & acting ability to pull it off!

That's "A Little Priest", end of Act I - but it's a duet with Sweeney, very hard to separated (if it's even possible).  It's also my favorite song in the show!

"'Then an actor, that's compacter'  'Yes, and always arrives overdone!'"

What about, Whatever Lola wants, Lola gets from Damn Yankees?  She's on hell of a diva. (Pun intended)
