I am a new middle school play director with big ideas but little technical knowledge.  One of the scenes of our play is a valley with bare trees in the background.  I am looking for a mysterious light effect.... and plan on using some low lying fog too. There will be 9 students cast as "shadows" who will appear and disappear from among the trees.  Any suggestions on how to make the set appear mysterious... and creepy? I have never used a scrim before but am wondering if I could incorporate it somehow.

Not knowing what your budget is, the easiest way would be to cut out 2-dimentional trees out of luan (underlayment, mahogany, etc.). This will give the "shadows" somewhere to hide. An idea with the scrim is to put the same trees in front if it and your shadows behind it. As you increase the light level behind the scrim, your shadows will apear to 'fade in and out' among the trees as they move. Hope this will help.
