I'm a 13 year old who is the Assiant Lighting Designer for Beauty and the Beast and we have no backstage space for any Be Our Geust sets (it's a 7min song whats the point of a large set? And the costumes and dancing is the main part of the song.) so the Lighting Designer and I have been given the job of making a show stoping number with masive sets on Broadway with lighting effects what do you sugest?

Some of the more light-proficient people will be along shortly, I'm sure, but they will want to know:

  • What size is the theatre?
  • Proscenium? Thrust? Arena?  Something else?
  • What kind of grid?  Any poles?
  • What types and numbers of instruments do you have available?
  • What color media are available?
  • What type of board?

I would think lots of color, lots of motion, certainly a follow-spot or two.  I might start it in the dark, with a single spot on Lumiere, and get it brighter and brighter as it goes on.

I hope this helps...

  • What size is the theatre?  It's somewhere around 60-80ft wide and 40-50ft deep aprox.
  • Proscenium? Thrust? Arena?  Something else? Proscenium with a Thrust
  • What kind of grid?  Any poles? 2 poles at the back of the stage I know theres 2 FOH bars 2 Follow Spots and about 5 or 6 bars across the stage.
  • What types and numbers of instruments do you have available? We have a lot of cans with colour changers on them then many gobo patterns that like the beast's lair and the cyc as well as for the villiage and transformation. Our lighting plot is not fully done yet.
  • What color media are available? Mostly Pinks, Purples, Greens, Yellows, for the stage and Reds, Greens, Blues, Yellows, For the cyc.
  • What type of board? Not fully sure on the brand or type I haven't worked with the board in the mainstage theatre.

Thanks!

Moving lights are a great idea for this. You should be able to rent a few. They will be a bit pricey but with all the things they can do you could find many moments in the show to use them. good luck.

We thought about using them but with a 22 show run they are really pricey!

For anyone with the same problem, I would suggest working with the costume designer to make sure each costume has reflective bits--sequins and the like.  It will help the number to pop.
