As a stage manager.... (someone please help me out and add to my list...)

  • I Recording ALL blocking---
  • Set up the stage for rehearsal, any set pieces or props go into place---
  • I call actors who are late---
  • I call actors and let them know of any changes to our schedule---
  • Call lines when the actors are off book (Though, the play I am in right now the director call in someone specifically prompt)---

In addition, as a stage manager, I also:

* help to create the rehearsal schedule and make sure all the actors have
it and that they have all given me their conflicts

* create a contact list and make sure everyone has it

*gather all the props for the show (whether from stock, borrowed or
bought)

* stand in for any actors who aren't at rehearsal

*fill out rehearsal reports and e-mail them to the director, TD (if there is
one) and anyone else who may need it

That's for rehearsals, for shows ...

*set the stage (furnature and props) and make sure everything is in its
place backstage (furnature, props, any costumes that are backstage for
quick changes

*give 30, 15, 10, 5 minute calls and places

*call the show (or, as in the case of the theatre I work at right now, I run
lights and sound myself)

A good book for you to look into is The Stage Management Handbook
by Daniel A. Ionazzi.

My calling is stage management, but I don't have enough time to go into everything that we do.  There are about 20 books on the subject (try Amazon).  I like the ones by Stern, Ionazzi, Fazio, and Kelly the best.   Also try searching on Google for "Carisa Dollar."  You will probably get a link to web page about child birthing.  Then go to her home page and click on the prompt corner.  She has won awards for her educational site in stage management.
