Does anyone else out there do Tony-award type award shows for local community theater?

We've been presenting the Lary Awards (named for an actor who began the nation's first and only community theater newsletter) every October since 1980.

It's a full night dinner and presentation with 22 categories and more than a dozen theaters involved.

Our Awards night would probably not figure in this topic!
However we have done something similar for the last 30 years with our Independent Theatre Association here, which only represents just over 100 member Theatre Groups of the 250 known community theatres in the state.

Although in actual fact state awards nights, did function under the previous ACTA banner for 10 years before that!
While for logistic reasons we mainly focus on the Perth metro & regional groups. There are theatre groups who do upto a 6000km round trip, regularly to be apart of it.
Being from West Australia I?m sure your interested & we don?t count! But just for general info! I have kbown of our Statewide Community theatre newsletter since I arrived here in 1960!

We dont do them with other theaters, but of the four theaters I belong to, each does an awards night kind of program, dinner, trophies, funny show stories etc.

One theater's awards are trophies that are called the "Golden Gizmo"

Another called "playmakers" does the "Playmockers Awards"

One does a golden barbie stuck in a tuna can. Its called the "Gus" and its named for the theater ghost.

Finally, the other does the "Laurel" awards puned after the Laurel wreath of rome but acutally named for Laurel & Hardy...

all are fun in thier own but differnet formats.

We have an awards night usually in March. Every production we do, we have a ballot where the audience marks their favorite actor in a variety of categories and then we hand out awards to the winners each year. Our council also has awards we give out at that time as well.

We had awards for both Twickenham Repertory Company and Huntsville Little Theatre, so when they merged in 1997 (although we did skip the first year or so), we eventually came around to doing it again.

Here's what's up: http://www.theatrehsv.org/events.htm - http://www.theatrehsv.org/events.htm

I'm trying to get them to call it the Noah, as you can see referenced at the bottom.  They still have the Academy Awards, and they are still Oscars.

But I don't think everyone always appreciates history.  Ah, well.

As for the Phoenix Theatre, we started up the ?Phoscars? for their first season. These are now awarded after each production for any outstanding performance of any type.
I received the very first one, for drop kicking a plastic chair off the stage, during rehearsals of ?Steeping Out?.
The very first ?Directors choice? Phoscar, I gave to Sasha, the bloke who trained the ?body suit?,  wore it & played ?Rose? the West Indian Lady?
He & his wife Irinni left shortly afterwards to live in New Mexico, where came from originally.
We also have the Gaffer Tape Awards for technical, which is a ball of odd bits of gaffer tape stuck together. There is the Golden, Black & white awards.
This seasons Phoscars awarded for ?Female Transport? were give for to one of the fairer gender for the loudest fart  & other involuntary performances!

We don't have an awards show for the community theaters in the area, but we do have one for the High School theater departments in the area.  They have the awards every May (after Memorial Day).  The are called the Freddy Awards, named after the ghost that haunts the theater where the awards are given out.  They have the awards just like the Tony's.  Best show, best choreography, etc...  Scholarships are awarded, and everything.  It is also shown live on our local television station.

We have an annual awards banquet at the end of our four show run (usually in late May or early June) that is a Tony type award for best actor, best director ets.  We have seven annonymous judges who vote on the awards.  We lso put on a show as part of the banquet and members get to show off and have some fun.  We have between 75 and 100 active members andusually have 55-65 attend.  Gives us a chance to dress up and have fun.
