I am 25 years old and completely new to theatre.  I have always dreamed of being in musical theatre, but never had the self-esteem to audition.  My first audition ever is in one week and they are requesting you perform 16-bars of any song.  My question is, how do you mark off the music?  Is it okay to start in the middle of a song if that shows off your voice better, or is it better just to start from the beginning and sing for 16 bars?

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you,

Jennifer

I know an actor who would always audition with the
LAST sixteen bars of "Billy's Soliloquy" from the
Rogers & Hammerstein musical "Carousel."

He would simply hand the music to the accompanist
and say "Start here." For anyone familiar with that
music, it starts very low and ends on a very powerful
and sustained high note.

It showed his range to full effect and directors had no
question about his abilities to be cast from that.

Just choose a part that will show off your range and show your strong points. I, personally, wouldn't choose one where 8 of the bars are you singing the very high last note, but choose one that you feel comfortable and have fun with.

heh heh - Topper, I know the technique. When I was young, I
used to audition with the final 16 from "They Call The Wind
Maria" LOL for exactly the same reason.

I couldn't hit those notes now for love nor money LOL
