We are intending to put on a production of Bugsy Malone and it has been handed to me to come up with the splurge guns.  Anyone out there have any suggestions for construction, what to use for splurge or any other ideas?

I'm sure you could probably find help here if you
would enlighten us Yanks as to what the heck a
"splurge" gun was and what kind of effect you're
expecting from it.

Awaiting further orders...

Obviously Topper you have not seen the movie! Which is a send up of the roaring 20?s & has the yanky brand stamp.

Rather than using machine guns they opted to use a look alike which fired good old custard pie foam.

Here is one design http://www.amadrama.co.uk/setdesign.shtml#ht3 - http://www.amadrama.co.uk/setdesign.shtml#ht3

& there are a number of UK places that hire them & supply the splurge or you can make it your self.

Contact a local group who have done the show!

If you do a Google search you will find heaps of contact sites.

Also there is instructions in the official authorised script of how to make the gun.

You can buy the splurge from;-

Howorth Wrightson Ltd
Unit 2, Cricket Street, Denton
Manchester, M34 3DR
Tel 0161 335 0220

However the cheapest way is to get a hold of some ?Erasmic? shaving sticks, either from Boots the Chemists or in bulk from Westons health care products in bulk.

Grate the 50g sticks into 200ml of warm water, use a mixing bowl of a food processor or in a bucket with an electric drill paint mixer attachment, depending on how much you need.

Add cornflour to the mix & whisk to a creamy consistency [peak] [to test hold the bowl upside down over you head - if you end up not wearing it, then it is mixed correctly!].

If you make it too thick, you can always water it down.

Also you can use Shaving foam from aerosol cans, while this costs more, it is easier.

Try not to use the custard pie or crazy foam that is available from Panto suppliers or fancy dress shops. Unless you sample test it first, because some foam tends to loose it?s consistency, when it come to throwing it.

We just finished Bugsy and I created splurge guns with Silly String foam from an online toy store.  JMD Toys and Gifts was the cheapest I found at $15/case of 12. The colors were great and we used about 2 cases for 4 shows.  I then decorated foam sheets with puffy, glitter paint, attached velcro and wrapped them around cans like covers.  We made small black covers for the splurge guns at the start of show and larger colorful covers for the Splurge 2.
