Hi! I'm new to this board. We are a looking for a play to do this year using all of our good high school drama alums. We are planning on doing "The Man Who Came To Dinner", but we need to know the royalty fee for this. If any knows this please let us know. Also, if you have a better play for a us to do and would like to tell us about it let us know. Thanks!

By the way we only have so far four strong males and four strong females with some other small actors. This might help if you are thinking of suggesting another play.

Step one is to find out who publishes it. They'll have the royalty info.

How about our new title 'Fate' (4m, 5f) - it will definitely test your acting skills, and it has a very strong storyline ...

Synopsis
When the warped minds of two familes being joined in marriage intertwine, the results are a devastating mix of incest, lies, bribery, fraud and adultery. Left to themselves the four flawed relationships in the two familes must ultimately lead to their self-destruction. Only fate can take a hand in the proceedings to change the outcome for two of the characters.

... check it out on our website http://www.playsandmusicals.co.uk - www.playsandmusicals.co.uk under 'Plays', 'Three Act', 'Drama'. Download a preview file in pdf to read the first 60-70% of the play.

dramatists.com has "Man who Came to Dinner". Either that or Samuel French Inc, but I'm not totally sure.

Thanks all! We've been looking at "The Man..." and it appears that costs/set maybe a little high for us. This is rather disappointing b/c of our actors we have perfect a Whiteside, Cosmo, Bert, Maggie, and Lorraine. That may give you a better look at the talent we've got. All 8 are talented. We're looking for something light and funny, that will go over well in our small, conservative town. Thank you for the response, but I have a feeling that incest and adultery would not go over well with our elderly audience. These are recent high school alums, so even something with young people would go over well. All are very talented musically also, but we felt that a full scale musical wouldn't be possible and would probably be more expensive. We've got probably 10 more actors (male and female) we could round up, all fairly talented.
Any suggestions?

THANKS!!

Actually, Padfoot, the royalties for "TMWCTDinner" are probably no more than any full length play.  (I just checked an out of date Dramatists Play catalog -- I doubt if it has changed -- it was $50 per performance in 2001.)  Maybe you are right about the set costing some money, but you can always find ways to economize.  If you can come up with 18 actors off the top of your head without holding auditions, you can probably cast the show.  It is a great show and I think it sounds like you have a good start on it.  I would definitely say go for it!

Why don't you look at Neil Simon's Farce "Rumors". It is great for an ensemble cast of 4 men and 4 women. There are 2 policemen who come on at the end. Samuel French holds the rights which are $75 per performance. There is one simple interior set with simple props.  Unlike TMWCTDinner there are no penquins or sarcophagus.

I'd suggest "Greater Tuna" which is traditionally done
with two actors playing 30-odd roles. I've heard of
situations similar to yours where the many roles
were cast with 30 actors (or fewer).   This would give
each of your star players a chance to shine in
several, offbeat, quirky vignettes.

Best of luck.
