I am part of a movement in my town to start a Cultural Arts Center (yet to be named).  A city organization to revitalize the uptown area has offered to allow us to form under their "umbrella."  I am certain that, in time, we will be able to form as an independent corporation and be recognized on the state and federal level as a non-profit.  Does anyone know details of transitioning from being a part of another organization to a separate entity?  Is it even worth it?  Our thought now is that we can form immediately and not have to wait the time it would take to fill out paperwork and submit it.
Any advice on this topic is greatly appreciated.

I have done this several times, with a number of groups. In fact we are in the process at the moment, with the Phoenix Theatre, which operating under the auspicious of an Incorporated group [Southwell Residents Association] Until we get our act together by mounting our inaugural production & becoming an association in our own right.

I did it a bit back to front though, by applying for 2 separate grants, from the Government & getting them. Then looking around for an Incorporated group, to act as our Bankers. This is proving to be a problem at times, trying to get cheques from them, when they are urgently needed. But this situation ha spurred our mob on, to get their collective fingers out & become a self supporting group as fast as is possible!

Best of luck!

You really won?t know - till you give IT a real go!

Thank you for your help.  I presented the post at our meeting, and they agree that it would be best to incorporate for ourselves.  We didn't want to get caught in any bad situations with a city organization.  My task now is to prepare all the paperwork.  Until the paperwork is done, donors can donate to another non-profit who will then hand the money to us (minus 1%).  Hopefully we won't have to use this, but its nice to know it's there.
