Okay, let's say you start a community theatre...technically this is a small business right? So in that case...assuming this is your business....to the owners work day jobs? It doens't seem like they could effectively run a theatre company and still have a normal day job...how does this work?

In pretty much every community theater I have delt with the people who run the theater also have normal 40+ hour a week jobs. I've done it, and I have to say that it often doesn't leave time for much else in your life.

I work 40 hours a week as does everyone else who is involved in the running of our theater. What works for me is that my day job is flexible. I can, for the most part, deal with whichever needs me the most. I do a lot of long range planning. That means sometimes I work 60 hours one week and 20 the next, so I am free to do what needs to be done in the theater. We all have very busy lunch hours and e-mail is an essential part of getting things done. I have a wonderful board all of whom are willing to take part in the business side running the theater. Good luck. It is hectic life, and wouldn't have it any other way.
