Hello, I'm in the process of costuming a local high school's production of Man of La Mancha and have found nothing in local thrift shops to adapt as the barber's shaving bowl that Don Quixote wears as a helmet. Any ideas? Paper mache??

Thanks!

Try your local Party Supply or Paper Products Outlet.
They may have large plastic bowls that can be
trimmed with a scissors and painted.
To add weight and size it for your actor's head, run
several bands of duct tape around the inside rim
before you paint.

"Thou Golden Helmet of Mandrino" Ah yes Lynne, I remember it well!

I have Produced/Directed two separate seasons of ?MOLM?.

The first time around, we had one made & the second one, was a steal kitchen bowl, pop riveted upside down on top of a round light shade with a large skirt. The neck space was cut out, then sprayed with gold paint. We also hammered a chin dimple, in the bowl to correspond with the neck. A leather luggage strap was used as a chin strap, again pop riveted on, so it can be worn by the Barber.

This worked well & in fact I still have it!

It only cost a few dollars, the most expensive bit was a pressed steal Light Shade, which was bought new. We cut away the central light fitting depression, however it is not necessary, as Quixote places the ?Token? on his head first, [which is Aldonza?s old dish cloth] which cushions the Helm as it is placed on top of Quixote/Cervantes head.

Man of La Mancha shaving bowl.  Go to dollar store and buy a large metal dog bowl in pet supplies.  Adapt inside with padding so it stays put on actor's head.
