I don't know that I will find what I am looking for, but this forum seemed like a good place to start looking. I am a teacher in a therapeutic day school. I have been assigned to teach a speech class. As I have been involved in theater for many years, I like to stress the importance of drama in public speaking. I run my students through exercises that I learned through theater regularly. My students get frustrated, as none of them signed up for a course in drama. I believe that there is an important connection between ones ability to speak effectively in a public forum (make a speech), and ones portrayal of emotion in a dramatic role on stage. I find that I have difficulty making clear to the students just what that connection is. I guess that I am asking for some advice , and some help in finding the words to help these students understand. maybe I'm way off base with this...I'm curious what others think.

If it were me, I would stress the connection by highlighting famous speeches, either current ones, or those from history. Make note of the intended effect and the emotion involved. If these people did not have a sense of how to play the audience, would their speeches have had any effect? Would they have been remembered?
