Hello! I am in the process of choosing our theater's next musical...however, we dont have the space or the money to hire a live band...how do I find out if there are accomaniment tracks for certain musicals? I am looking at the show Once Upon a Mattress, Lil Abner, and Big, the musical. Any suggestions where to look?

thanks, Andrea

I believe you would have to get this from the company the licenses the show. I know Big is Music Theater International, don't know about the other two.

Having the track made for your group is probably the best option.  This allows for cuts, key changes, and stylistic differences between your show and the original.

I make tracks for theater companies, and if you're interested you can email me at mailto:applauz13@hotmail.com - applauz13@hotmail.com

I'm confused about the option of making your own tracks or
hiring someone else to do that. Doesn't that effect the copyright
of the musical?

If you're paying the royalties for the musical, that includes performance rights for the songs.  You couldn't burn CDs and sell them in the lobby, but you can perform the songs however you want -- live, recorded, or just get the audience to hum the harmony line .

Might be more entertaining than some pit orchestras I've heard!

What's the line from 42nd Street . . . "That's why they keep 'em in a pit!"

 A wee point!
Check your 'Grand or Small Rights' performance licence, as some still exclude mechanically recorded music accompaniment.
Those who do allow can music, require it to be only an approved recording, which they have extracted a fee for the use of!
