Okay - how about this?

"A fireplace, practical to the extent that paper can be burned in it"?

Literally what it says - I'm doing Deathtrap - Sidney burns pieces of a manuscript in the fireplace, twice -- I need to accomplish that!

When we did this a while a go, we used a ?Pot Belly? stove with a light effect inside, which worked well!

I mounted 3 coloured incandescent globes in fittings on a plastic box, with a single phase lead. For the electrical gubins circuitry inside, I put neon starters in series with the each of the globes & powered them through a channel on the Lighting board. The operator could set the intensity of the ?Flicker? & simulate a fire. The paper was just thrown in behind the glass door & the light increased to look like flames & then died down. The lighting flicker effect box has been used quite a lot since in open fireplaces as well!

However get a licensed electrician to assemble & check it out. [As this is for ordinary incandescent lighting only & not a Neon circuit driving Fluorescent lighting, it would not have to comply with your local & International rules & regulations, applied to Neon or Fluorescent fittings.]

cirque du soleil uses GREAT fake fire in its shows - a ragged-cut tube of red/orange/black very soft sheer fabric, mounted on a pipe or hose - when air is forced through from underneath , the fabric flutters up - looks very real.  needs practice to get the fabric colors and edges right. sacrifice a couple of pantyhose legs for the fabric.

We did Deathtrap.  I made a fake fireplace out of wood. Dolloped expanding foam on it to create the rocks (painted them to look like granite) The the "real" fire (out theater wouldn't let fire be on stage) I had a fan facing upwards, and some bits of cloth and tinsel tied to a wire arcing over the fan and two orange lites shining on the reflective cloth. When Sydney through the manuscript in, we just brought the orange lights up a bit for a moment. It looked very convincing and the fire could burn throughout the play. In fact we left the curtains open when the audience arrived to they could get the ambience of Sydney's study.
