We are in need of a good source of qualified Community Theater Directors for our group. Is there any listing or association of people who wish to direct you could point me to? We are located in Midland, Michigan at the Midland Center for the Arts. We pay our directors an honorarium but do not normally provide housing. We are looking for someone to direct "City of Angels" which opens February 18, 2000.

We continually have problems in getting directors for our shows. Being located in a low population, rural area hurts. One idea that I have broached to our group (since they were crazy enough to elect me president) is develop a pool of directors by staging a series of one act plays. I have heard several people say thay they would like to learn how to direct, but don't feel that they can take on a full length play. My feeling is that this methodology will build up the confidence factor. We have tried using assistant directors with some success of developing directors. Gotta keep prospecting!!

I would put up a notice at Central Michigan University, maybe even talk to some of the faculty there (most, epecially Steve Berglund, are very approachable) about students that may be interested in getting some experience. You may be surprised with the quality of director you can get. There are quite a few students there who are wonderful directors.

I gotta echo Steve's suggestion of a series of one-act plays. We have an annual one-act play festival. It's a great training ground for new directors (including me). It's also a great way to get new actors involved, who don't want to commit to the scheduled required for a full-length play. Plus, you can take risks with one-acts that you might not be able to take with your major productions. Totally win-win-win situation.
