For about 2 years I've directed a little theatre called "Second Street Theatre". I'm 13 and our stage is a nice sized porch belonging to a neighbor compleate with lights and curtains. All of my actors/actresses are dedicated, fun, and sometimes hillarious kids from all over the neighborhood. We get coustumes from older neighbors who lend us their entire attics. We get lots of sets from the older guys in our neighborhood who build them with scrap wood.
We're a real hit with the older folks and the young people alike. We've done murder mysteries, detective series, patriotic plays, comedies, adventures, and a drama. Now, at the beginning of our 2nd compleate season, we're in search of a new idea. I write the scripts, along with my sister. Our plays are usually only about an hour long and we have limeted space and time to decide before the season is supposed to start. Please help me come up with an idea! |

Wow, Cody, you're doing better than a lot of theater companies run by grown-ups! Especially doing your own original plays -- that's pretty impressive. As for ideas, well, it's really hard to say where those come from. If you haven't already, you might look at adapting a classic, well-known story and updating it for modern times -- you feel ready to handle Shakespeare yet? I write lyrics for our fundraiser every year, and sometimes it's hard to come up with something new; I find that a lot of my best ideas just come to me out of the blue when I'm not really thinking about them. Sometimes som pretty funny stuff can come out of putting odd things together with a "what if?" Like "What if people had tails, and actors had to go to tail class to work on using them expressively?" or "What if I work up and suddenly found myself back in 1865?" Those aren't necessarily brilliant ideas, but that kind of thinking can help you let your imagination go, and that's where creativity comes from. Good luck!

I, for one, see great things ahead for you and your sister, Cody! You will probably be another "Provincetown Players" which was founded by Susan Glaspell and her husband and friends. They wrote their own plays (that is how Susan got started writing plays) and also helped other playwrites get started. Famous ones, like Eugene O'Neill! (MY Sister has been reading about these people and has been very inspired by them. She and I just two years ago started a community theatre in a town of about 200 people. We do six performances of our productions and almost always fill house (166 seats). So, in my opinion, you are most certainly on the right track!
I am sorry I don't have an idea right off the top of my head to give you for a play. I just wanted to cheer your efforts and originality! Wish I could see a show! |

The Shakespeare idea is a great suggestion -- how about the Pyramus and Thisbe scene from A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM? Another idea might be to drmatize some of the poems of A.A. Milne, or any other favorite poet.
The play HOW TO EAT LIKE A CHILD is a winner and it's the right length for you. It has an all kids cast with flexible numbers, but there would be royalty and music issues that might be more than you could deal with. Good luck! |

Cody,
One idea you could try is a no royalty play called "Bang Bang You're Dead - a play about the consequences of a shooting. Check out the web site at http://www.bangbangyouredead.com/ HTH |

My theater group is just about to start a run of Pollyanna. Since the book is in the public domain, and therefore we didn't have to worry about copyright problems, we did our own script. We closely followed the book, unlike the Disney movie (did you know Pollyanna didn't fall from a tree, but was hit by a car?).
Do you homeschool, by any chance? You sound like a person who has the time, freedom and self-direction to follow her own interests. I'd love to see a production. Susan |

As a parent of a 3-year-old, I'm always on the lookout for fun places to take her. Last friday we ended up at a small theater doing some fairy tales for the toddlers. The one we saw was Jack and the Beanstalk, about 30 minutes. You could do just about any kind of short fairy tale or nursery rhyme for the little kids, and probably get a packed house. Parents are starved for places to bring their little ones, rather than sitting in front of the TV during winter. And at $6.00 a head, you could rake it in!
