bullet Topic: Props: Buddha statues
    Posted: 3/28/02 at 7:36pm
I've got myself into a bit of a prop pickle. I am the sm for the play Black Comedy which requires a Buddha statue to be shattered every performance. Dealing with a tight budget, any ideas on where I can get, or how I can manufacture, a dozen buddha statues at least 12" tall?

I don't know how tight your budget is, but I'm not sure something this specific can be accomplished without some expense.

Ceramic hobbyists can buy ready made, unfired objects which they then glaze and fire. Several times I have called on friends to prepare ceramic props for shows I have directed.

I did THE MIRACLE WORKER several years ago, and in that show Helen has to smash two water pitchers each performance. I was able to get some very nice, period looking pitchers of a decent size for eight dollars apiece. There was no other expense involved as we were told they would shatter better unfired. For a production of SLEUTH we had to smash a small figurine each performance and we were able to get figures about six inches high for about two dollars apiece. Look around for someone who does ceramics as a hobby, there are all kinds of things in catalogues that can be ordered; a Buddha statue doesn't sound so unusual. Surely what you need can be found out there.

I don't know where you live, but in my area I can get these at some dollar stores for like 2 bucks a piece ... have you tried dollar stores near you?

Really? I've found small statuetts (under 6") in some of the local stores, but nothing big enough. At least, not for a decent price. But I keep getting told of these great deals. Everyone I talk to knows where to get these things, but I can't find them anywhere. Very frustrating. I'll keep looking. I'm sure they are out there someplace, and I'd rather not bother casting my own if I can avoid it.

Call all of your dollar stores! And here's another suggestion: Try Chinatown if there's an equivalent in your area.
